Jammu, Feb 17 (KNO): Congress MLA Irfan Hafiz Lone on Tuesday said his party will fight any attempt to disturb communal harmony in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that unity and brotherhood will not be allowed to suffer. Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), MLA Lone said that even though the controversial remarks were later withdrawn, the issue cannot be brushed aside. He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir are united and will not allow anyone to damage communal harmony. “Unity and brotherhood are our strength. We will ensure that every step is taken to protect it,” he said. Lone accused the BJP of pursuing politics based on division and polarisation. He said such tactics will be defeated through democratic and political means. “We are ready to sacrifice, but we will not allow divisive forces to succeed,” he added. The Congress leader said his party remains committed to safeguarding constitutional values and keeping what he described as BJP RSS ideology at bay. He said the larger objective is to protect the social fabric of Jammu and Kashmir. Congress leader and MLA Wagoora-Kreeri said issues like MGNREGA, regularisation of daily wagers, and restoration of statehood remain key priorities for the party. He expressed concern over a trade deal with the United States, claiming it could adversely impact the region’s horticulture sector, especially the apple industry. “Our growers could face serious losses if such agreements are implemented without safeguards. We will oppose any move that harms local interests,” he said. On the question of statehood, Lone said the Congress continues to pin hope on its restoration and is actively fighting for it at every forum—(KNO)
